Hmmm... Thinking back to before I saw the show, I suppose I was expecting more music, probably because it is so dominant in the movie, but having watched the production, I'd say there was just the right amount. There was enough to make Mozart's brilliance clear. I loved the way Martin Sims' portrayal of Salieri allowed you to see him experiencing the music. It made Salieri's frustration at his inability to create at the same level so much more human. I felt way more empathy for the "villain" than I have before.

I'm guessing that part of the issue with the amount of music is that, as I recall, the movie includes much longer segments of music. I can remember getting lost in the beauty of the music. That worked well in the film, but I think the shorter segments in the Chemainus production keep more focus on the story between Salieri and Mozart. I really liked that clarity. I think it added more power to the story.

My other thought is that if the production had wanted more focus on the music, it may have needed a full orchestra which seems impractical and doesn't actually add anything. In general, people are familiar enough with Mozart's music to fill in the "soundtrack" ... the woman beside me was humming along with the piece from the Magic Flute =)

Thank you, Karen. I certainly couldn't ask for a better review than that! And of course! Enjoy the chai!!

We've had three talk back sessions at the theatre now, and one of the questions that keeps coming up is in regards to the music in the show... many say there isn't enough of it! To me it seems like there's tonnes, but I'm interested to hear any thoughts on that.

Can I have a chai latte in the cozy lounge instead?

Not sure I've got any questions, but had to comment that while I was delighted by Leaf Conneybear in Spelling Bee and thought The Life Inside was one of the most beautiful and poignant things I've ever seen, I love the details in your performance of Amadeus, particularly as Mozart was falling apart. It added a depth and richness to the character that made Salieri's actions both more understandable and more hateful all at the same time.

I can well see why you're going to miss playing this role. It's been a long time since I've watched the movie and I love it, but I'm pretty certain that I'd rather watch the Chemainus production then the movie. =) Many thanks!

LoL!

Depends on who you talk to, but I like to do a couple of different things... Read the play a billion times, which is very helpful, but then I re-type all of my scenes in their entirety. Really helps get it in your head along with all of the punctuation.

Then I use an app for my iPad called "Rehearsal" which lets me black out all of my lines in the script while seeing what the other characters are saying. Works like a hot damn!
